Maritime & Marine

Shield Environmental Services have extensive knowledge of the marine industry with over 30 years experience we are able to offer a comprehensive range of services to this unique market.

Operating from our dockyard sites in Newcastle and Falmouth, Shield’s Marine specialists can offer a complete range of asbestos services and insulation applications from thermal and acoustic insulation to conversion and refurbishment works.

Shield Environmental Services have a proven track record and guarantee to deliver on the most complex of projects ensuring that vessels are completed on time and to client satisfaction.

By identifying hazardous materials such as asbestos, we are able to carry out full survey reports to enable potential risks to be highlighted prior to refit works being undertaken.

This can, in many cases reduce the time a vessel is in dock; minimising the duration of out of service time. Asbestos removal can be particularly challenging within this sector due to the need to work with other trades and the limitations of working within confined spaces.

We are constantly updating our profile in line with our Clients requests and also have a continuous program of development and improvement within the Marine sector.

Many of our Clients have set up framework service level agreements with us where cost reduction, quality and health and safety are priority initiatives to satisfy our Client’s requirements.

Capabilities included:

  • Asbestos Removal, Surveys & Testing.
  • Marine Insulation applications of all disciplines and including refractory repairs.
  • Fabrication and design of sheet metal including exhaust cladding and installation of trunking and ducting.
  • Joinery including access work, GRP laminating and repair.
  • Acoustic and fire protection to bulkheads and deckheads.

Green Passport

Inventory of Hazardous Materials

Within this sector the majority of our work relates to asbestos surveying and removal. Shield Environmental services can conduct surveys for hazardous materials on vessels around the World, whether they are being built, traded, or due to be recycled. To accommodate your specific requirements our surveying teams can work on vessels in port or while at sea. For your convenience our surveying teams are able to meet and leave the vessel at most ports internationally.

Once completed the  ‘Inventory of Hazardous Materials’ or Green Passport as it is more widely known provides the ships owner with a comprehensive report that helps to promote better hazard management on board ships.  The report documents the types and condition of all materials found on the vessel, which can be updated as changes to materials on the vessel occur.

As well as ensuring safer and more environmentally friendly dismantling of ships, the Green Passport provides a single list of hazardous materials, which will help to promote better hazard management on operational vessels. The document will be able to be used to show measurable objectives for the protection of the environment from the contaminants carried on board the ship, it will aid the achievement of ISO 14001 accreditation, thus enhancing your company’s commercial reputation and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). In a world that is becoming increasingly interested in sustainable business and companies with ethical goals, as a commercial company CSR is not something to be taken lightly.

Ship Recycling

Using experience gained from many years operating in this field we have developed a highly skilled workforce capable our surveying the most complex vessels and safely and efficiently removing any asbestos containing materials that have been identified. Our specifically customised protocols and approach to Marine asbestos removal ensures that the risk of occupational asbestos exposure for ship breaking operatives following our works is negligible.

Ship Repair

Shield Marine undertake an ongoing program of ship repair on vessels throughout the United Kingdom for Clients including the MOD, A&P Group, P&O Ferries and many smaller private operators. All projects, wherever undertaken, are supported with technical and development initiatives from our base in Falmouth Docks.

Recent Marine Projects

Ocean Boomer

Shield Marine were commissioned to remove asbestos from the engine room and boilers of the vessel as part of a refit exercise.

The boilers were removed intact through the shell plate in the side of the vessel, which was removed during the works to allow access and subsequently refitted upon completion.

Following the asbestos removal our specialist tradesmen undertook a full insulation survey of the vessel. We completed extensive insulation replacement works enabling the vessel to be returned to service compliant with class and International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) requirements.

MOD Royal Marines Training Vessel

Shield Marine was commissioned to remove asbestos contamination from throughout the ship.

We undertook a survey onboard the vessel to identify the exact location and extent of the contamination. All identified asbestos was subsequently removed under fully controlled conditions, the vessel was environmentally cleaned and handed back fit for re-occupation.

EX-MOD Vessel refitted for Sale Abroad

Shield Marine undertook a fully intrusive asbestos survey of the vessel, identifying asbestos containing materials in various locations. We safely removed all materials identified.

Our operatives subsequently undertook extensive washroom and accommodation fit out works in preparation for the sale of the vessel.

We are members of the following industry bodies:

Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA)

Asbestos Control & Abatement Division (ACAD)

Thermal Insulation Contractors Association (TICA)

We work to Lloyds, DNV, BV, MED and MCA regulations.
