University of Bath
Undercroft of Wessex House to Norwood House
Scope of works
Shield Environmental Services were awarded the asbestos removal contract for works on the University of Bath Parade Underdeck. The work was completed in 12 separate phases which commenced in June 2010.
The work consisted of the removal of rust, asbestos debris, guano and lead paint from horizontal steel work and concrete surfaces of the underdeck. The works were commissioned to allow structural engineers access tothe undercroft areas of the University in order for the condition of the steelwork to be assessed and future structural repair work to be carried out.Due to the contamination, all works needed to be carried out within purpose built enclosures framed with timber battens and lined in 1000 gauge polythene sheeting. All contaminates were removed using an ultra high pressure jet cleaning system to achieve a SA2½ grade finish in preparation for the subsequent application of an intumescent protective coating.

University of the West of England
UKATA Training for Contractors at UWE
At the University of the West of England (UWE), it has been a long-standing requirement for all construction contractors to demonstrate that they have at least asbestos awareness training before being authorised to work on site. It became apparent that where contractors had received training, the quality was highly variable. UWE therefore specified a minimum standard of UKATA (United Kingdom Asbestos Training Association) accredited training.
UWE quickly discovered that some contractors, particularly smaller companies, hadproblems organising this training. Therefore, UWE took the innovative decision to deliver this training free of charge as part of the mandatory safety induction for contractors. However, UWE had neither the expertise nor time to deliver this training themselves. Consequently UWE developed arrangements with external providers.

RNAS Culdrose
Asbestos Works W Site
During April 2009 Shield Environmental Services were requested to carry out asbestos surveys within various buildings at W site RNAS Culdrose. Due to the known presence of asbestos material within the roof void, a Type 3 was commissioned to assess the quantity and condition of such material to enable maintenance workers to gain access to carry out electrical and mechanical works.
The asbestos survey indentified asbestos within various locations throughout the void in the form of asbestos insulation to pipe work and asbestos insulation board debris. Due to the extent and condition of the material, access into the roof void was prohibited until a detailed proposal could be obtained to establish the most cost effective way to ensure the area was safe for access.
Ocean Boomer
Mariner Case Study - Ocean Boomer
While the MV Ocean Boomer was at A&P Falmouth under going a refit in July 2005 when a suspected asbestos contamination incident was reported. The Engine Room and machinery spaces were immediately sealed off by analysts pending confirmation ofthe contamination and the extent ofthe affected area.
Shield Environmental Services Ltd was requested to attend the vesselto provide specialist advice. Air tests were carried out and samples taken to assess the extent of the asbestos containing materials (ACMs). All airtests and samples taken for analysis proved positive. It was then agreed that the exhausts, silencers, boiler and pipework were to have all asbestos insulation removed and disposed of. Some small areas of asbestos insulation which were in good condition and positioned in areas where they could not be damaged during normal vessel operation were to be encapsulated. On completion of the removal works it was agreed that the entire engine room and uptake space along with the area below the floor plates required extensive environmental cleaning prior to handover.

HMS Bristol
HMS Bristol has recently been successfully tendered by A&P Tyne.
The work on board will include the upgrading of accommodation for cadets. The vessel will be based in Portsmouth when the refit work is completed.
The vessel is known to contain asbestos and following arecent enquiry to SES extensive surveys are now being carried out on the vessel at the A&PTyne yard in Newcastle.SES have supplied surveyors from Bristol and Cornwall to assist the local SES personnel on site at Tyne to insure that the contract can move forward to the strict program set out by the main contractor.

Lake Shore
Asbestos Removal Project
In November 1999 a licensed asbestos removal contractor was prosecuted by the HSE and fined £120,000 for failing to adequately supervise the safe removal of asbestos spray coating applied to structural steel work present on the site.
Anecdotal information indicates large quantities of sprayed coating were poorly removed using pressure washers, resulting in asbestos laden slurry being allowed to disperse into near by road drainage systems.
