Shield Team Cycle 100 miles in Support of Action Medical Research for Children
September 07, 2010 at 4:26 PM

An enthusiastic team of ten cyclists took part in the Bath to London Action 100 cycling challenge in aid of medical research for children on Sunday 29th August. With only five weeks preparation time it was always going to be challenging for all those involved who ranged from Directors, Branch Managers and Operatives.
The route took the team from Bath along the A4 towards London finishing at Kempton Park Racecourse in Sunbury on Thames covering a total of 100 miles. Although there were different levels of cycling fitness within the team all members completed the course within seven hours, which is was a truly amazing effort.
Julian House Business Development Director said “This truly was a team effort with everyone supporting each other along the route; there were times when we all had low points and felt like stopping. We are all thrilled with our achievement and are already discussing next year’s challenge”.
The Shield team raised over £1,000 pounds for Action Medical Research for Children. The charity was originally founded in 1952 by Duncan Guthrie in his quest to find a cure for polio, a condition that blighted the lives of many thousands of children including his own daughter Janet. Early research funded by the charity led to the development and rapid adoption of the first polio vaccine which eradicated new cases of the disease in the UK.
Since then the charity has developed an extraordinary track record in supporting some of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent history – breakthroughs that have helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more.
