Shield Surveying Division awarded submarine surveying contract
March 07, 2011 at 2:35 PM
Shield have been successful in our bid to support Babcock in the production of Inventory of non-radiological Hazardous Material reports for seven nuclear powered submarines, which have completed their service with the Royal Navy and are now laid up at Rosyth Royal Dockyard.
Teams of specialist Shield surveyors, with specific experience of marine asbestos surveys are working alongside Babcock’s own specialist technicians to provide pre-disposal asbestos surveys; required prior to the eventual dismantling of these vessels.
Our surveyors are working strictly in accordance with the safety protocols in force within the Dockyard and have received specific induction training, provided by the Dockyard’s Health Physics Department to ensure their safety at all times.
The Inventory of non-radiological Hazardous Materials provides a formal summary of all non-nuclear materials present in a vessel’s structure, systems and equipment that could pose a hazard to health or the environment.
Jason Hocking, SES Technical Director stated:
“The award of this contract is a testament to the expertise and professionalism of our Surveying Division. We are delighted to have been entrusted with this unique task by Babcock Marine and are sure that experience gained from surveying these technically complex vessels will be invaluable in progressing our aspirations to deliver IHMs, in partnership with Babcock Marine, across the full spectrum of Marine Clients”.
