On Tuesday 2nd November a variety of contractors, apprentices and small business owners within the building trade gathered at Coleg Powys, North Wales to attend one of a series of Working Well Together (WWT) events being held across the UK to raise awareness of key health and safety issues currently facing the construction industry.

Shield Environmental attended the event exhibiting alongside organisations such as CHAS and Constructionline giving delegates access to key practical advice on how to avoid risks on construction sites and the opportunity to meet with the organisations who could offer them guidance and support.

The morning’s activities involved a variety of informative presentations on the importance of carefully following Health and Safety protocol while on site, the topics covered were: the dangers of Asbestos; Safe Working from Heights; Behavioural Safety/ Near Misses; Transport & Vehicles on site and Working within Confined Spaces.

Shield Asbestos Operatives and Supervisors constructed an airlock and enclosure on site to demonstrate what equipment is used during the asbestos removal process. A decontamination unit was also on display with other key items of equipment that are used, allowing delegates to ask various questions about the asbestos removal process and view the extent of equipment that is used.

The WWT event was a great opportunity for Shield to meet entry level construction workers and small business owners in a largely rural community who may not have ready access to asbestos advice.

Kevin Staniforth Shield Training Manager commented, “It was a great opportunity to meet with those who may not be able to travel to events such as these that can often be held in larger centres. In bringing the WWT event to Coleg Powys, it also generates awareness for apprentices and entry level construction workers of the dangers of Asbestos and the importance of remaining alert and safe on site. At an event such as this creates an environment where they may feel more comfortable in discussing any queries they have regarding asbestos and if we can be of any assistance to them within their respective trades.”
