Leicester City Council, New Walk Museum
Asbestos Removal & Remediation

Shield was instructed by Leicester City Council to remove 100% chrysotile loose-fill insulation from the ceiling within the main art gallery at New Walk Museum and Art Gallery.

The works took place between January and June 2013 during which time the museum remained open to the public.

The museum is a Grade II listed building and all remedial works were undertaken in line with strict heritage regulations. Sections of the decorated plaster were cut out, cleaned and sealed allowing the follow-on contractor to create the same decorated plaster finish. Each individual plaster frame was measured to ensure that each replacement frame was exactly the same size.

Council representatives were on hand at all times to monitor our progress and regular liaison took place between Shield and the council to ensure minimal disruption was caused to the museum’s staff and visitors.
